Kumarakom boat race which is also called as Sree Narayana Jayanthi boat race or Kannetti Guru Jayanthi boat race is conducted at Kottathodu in Kumarakom. This boat race is conducted in memory of the social reformer Sree Narayana Guru. According to history, in 1903 Sree Narayana Guru visited Kumarakom and he consecrated an idol in a temple called the Kumaramangalam temple. He visited Kumarakom by boat and his visit was a celebration to the villagers in Kumarakom. This event is commemorated by the natives here by conducting the boat race annually.
This boat race is held on the Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi day which falls on the Chathayam star of Malayalam month Chingam. Special Poojas are performed at the Kumaramangalam temple and several competitions are conducted for the children. Then there will be a colorful procession of the boats from the Kumaramangalam temple carrying the portrait of Sree Narayana Guru. It is accompanied by Panchavadyam, dance performances and art forms such as kolkali, Theyyam etc.
More than 25 boats of various types participate in the boat race and the important boat type that participates in this race is the Iruttukuthi. Around 50 oarsmen can row in this boat and the winning Iruttukuthi gets the Sree Narayana Ever Rolling Trophy.
