An annual boat race conducted in Kochi is Indira Gandhi Boat Race. This is a popular snake boat race held in the beautiful Kochi Lake and is conducted by the Department of Tourism of Kerala. This race marks the ending of the Tourism fair and is attracted by a huge crowd. The trophy given to the winning team is named after the former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. This boat race is held in the last week of December.
Around 16 snake boats participate in the Indira Gandhi boat race. The natives in Kochi and people in South India who are farmers and fishermen are the oarsmen of these boats and are selected based on their performances. Anyone who knows how to move the oar can participate in this boat race. This festival is a visual treat to the visitors and tourists.
