The Periyar Tiger reserve is located in Thekkady in Idukki district. The Periyar sanctuary was declared as a Tiger Reserve under the Project Tiger Scheme and it is a major centre of attraction for all the tourists. Periyar wildlife sanctuary is famous for its large wildlife and landscape. There is also a lake through which one can take a cruise along it to take a glance of the wildlife. The tourists can conduct trekking trails and various other adventurous activities.

Ecotourism Activities

In this sanctuary the plantation includes evergreen, grassland and moist deciduous forests and has a wide variety of flora and fauna. Here there are about 1800 species of flowering plants. Some of the economic activities are

Nature walk which involves trekking through various trails and there will be a guide to accompany them. There will be some interactive programmes also. This trekking enables a person to view the forests and the flora and fauna of this area.

Tiger trail which is a trekking that is protection oriented. There will be guides who were poachers before. The main aim of such a package is to bring an aware among the people about the need for prevention and detection of illegal activities in the forests. The programmes are selected by the tourists themselves according to their wish. The programmes include one night and two days package and two nights and three days package.

Border Hiking which is the trekking along the border of the Tiger reserve that enables one to enjoy the flora and fauna. This is a one day programme and there will be 2 guides and an armed guard to accompany the tourists.

There are Bamboo Groves which are huts that are made of eco friendly materials like bamboo. People can come here and stay and also conduct camps from here.

Bamboo rafting programme consists of a day long programme which includes trekking and rafting across the forests. The tourist will be accompanied by 4 guard and an armed guard.

Jungle Camp – In this camp, the tourists can visit tribal colonies, Mullaperiyar dam, tea factories, spice plantations etc. They can also conduct trekking, boating, rafting vehicle safari etc. Tourists can go in large groups for this camping. Jungle Patrol is a night patrolling programme and there will be 2 watchers and an armed guard to accompany the tourists.

Night Camping – In this programme the tourists can trek from the check post into the forest and camp at the jungle inn. The tourist gets a rare opportunity to enjoy the splendor and silence of the jungle at night.

Bullock Cart Discoveries – This programme includes visiting the farmlands where the tourists can see and understand about the various farming techniques. The tourists can also go for a coracle ride.

Tribal Heritage

There is a tribal heritage museum here and the tourists can visit this to understand the culture of the tribes settled here. The people can also visit the tribal village. Around 39kms away from Periyar lies the Peermedu which is a hill where spices like coffee, vanilla, tea and many other crops are grown.


Accommodation is provided at the watchtowers, motels, resorts like Muthoot Cardamom County, Shalimar Spice Garden, Jungle Village etc. In Vallakkadavu, there is tented accommodation as well.

Periyar is located in the Kerala Tamil Nadu border at a height of around 900 to 2,019 m above sea level. The nearest airport is at Coimbatore at a distance of 145 km. The nearest railway station lies in Kottayam at a distance of 114 km and the roads are connected to Thekkady from Kumily just 5 kms away. From Kumili it is easy to get buses that connect to almost all the major cities of Kerala.
