Tirur River which has a length of 48 kms is well known for the mangroves and the variety of fishes here. This river starts from the Athavanad hills in Tirur in Malappuram and then flows through Thirunavaya, Elamkulam and joins Bharathapuzha River. It then flows into the Arabian Sea near Ponnani. The water is suitable for transportation and is a division of the west coast water transport system. The birth place of the great Malayalam poet Thunchath Ramanujan Ezhuthachan called Thunjan Parambu is near the banks of this river. Also the birth place of the founder of Kerala Kalamandalam named Vallathol Narayana Menon is near to this river.
There are many small islands in this river. This river also like other rivers is being polluted now due to the disposal of wastes and other activities.
