In olden times education was given the least priority in Wayanad district. The quality and standard of the education was also very low. So this district was brought under a new scheme that was funded by the World Bank. This scheme that is implemented here is the District Primary Education Programme which aims of introducing new and modern teaching principles. Text books have been distributed to the students while the teachers were provided with hand books.
The population of tribal groups in Wayanad is more and educating them is still not successful. All the efforts made to educate them have not been fully successful. There are Residential schools with better facilities in remote areas for educating them. Earlier students from Wayanad had to go to other districts or places for their higher studies. But now there are several colleges here that provide courses in various fields.
Wayanad is a single educational district. Now there are many schools, colleges and other educational institutions in Wayanad and these are set to change the traditional way of life of the people in the field of educational sector. The literacy rate in Wayanad district is 89.32%.
