Tourist Destinations Kannur

Kannur district which is famous for handlooms and beedi industries is a coastal district which has a great historical significance. The tourism potential of Kannur is very high and is increasing steadily. The vast coastal areas have beaches like Payyambalam beach, Thalasseri beach, Ezhimala beach, Muzhappilangad beach, Kizhunna Ezhara beach, Meenkunnu beach andMoppila beach. Muzhappilangad is a drive in beach and the people can take a long drive through the beach. There are 2 main forts here namely the St. Angelo’s fort and Thalasseri fort. St. Angelo’s fort stands as a symbol of Portuguese architectural excellence.

The hill ranges in Kannur include the Paithalmala and Ezhimala. There is also a naval academy at Ezhimala. The wildlife sanctuary in Kannur district is the Aralam wildlife. There is a snake park at Parassinikadavu where hundreds of snakes are kept for display and the treatment for various snake bites are also available from here. Besides there are 2 amusement parks namely Vismaya amusement park and Sadhoo Merry Kingdom. The other places of interest in Kannur are given below

Dharmadam Island

Dharmadam Island which is also called as the Green Island is situated in the Kannur district and is an island that is away from the main land. It is a fascinating beach and the 5 acre island is covered with large coconut trees and palms. This island is a best choice for picnic.

Ezhimala Beach

The Ezhimala beach is in Kannur district and is a very prominent beach which provides beautiful scenery of the coconut trees and the sun’s rays penetrating through them. Here, the hospitality provided is traditional and is often called a virgin territory. Entry to this beach is only with prior permission. This beach lies between hills and so is at a very high altitude.

Kizhuna Ezhara Beach

Kizhunna Ezhara beach is in Kannur district which has beautiful golden colored sand. The beach is surrounded by beautiful coconut trees. It is considered to be a secluded beach of Kerala and is a newly added tourist destination. But now it became popular and tourists come here in large numbers.

Meenkunnu Beach

Meenkunnu Beach which is an extension of Payyambalam beach, is situated in Azhikode village in Kannur district. The word ‘Meenkunnu’ is composed of two Malayalam words ‘Meen’ which means fish and ‘kunnu’ which means a small hill. It is a beautiful and peaceful beach with golden sand. It is a small beach and is so not crowded by the tourists.

Moppila Beach

Moppila beach is located in Ayikkara in Kannur district. The bay is a very famous fishing harbour and is near the St.Angelo’s Fort. On the other side of the bay is the Arakkal Palace. The sea is separated from the inland water by a wall that extends from the fort.

Muzhappilangad Beach

Muzhappilangad Beach is in Kannur district and is parallel to the national highway. One can view this sea on their journey in bus from Kannur to Thalassery. This beach has a length of about 5 kms. There are huge black rocks that border the sea which protects from the strong currents of the ocean.

Payyambalam Beach

Payyambalam Beach is in Kannur district. It is quite a famous beach and attracts numerous tourists as well as local people. There is a cliff on one end of the beach. It is a very beautiful beach with a garden nearby. A major attraction in this garden is the sculpture of a mother and child by the famous sculptor Kanayi Kunjiraman. There are various play items for the children to enjoy well.

Thalasseri Beach

Thalasseri beach lies in Kannur district. Thalasseri is a port town that is situated at a distance of 22 kms from Kannur town. Besides the beauty of the beach one can also explore the colonial relics of this place. The beautiful Thalasseri fort is near to this beach.

St Angelo Fort

St. Angelo Fort is situated in Kannur district. It is also called as Kannur Fort or Kannur Kotta. This fort faces the Arabian Sea and lies in the Cantonment area in Kannur. It is separated from the sea by a huge wall. A stair case leads to the top of this wall. It is triangular in shape and made of laterite stone.

Thalasseri Fort

Thalassery Fort is in Kannur district. It was built by the British East India Company and was the Military centre of the British. This fort built in the year 1708, stands on a cliff in Thalasseri beach. It is a square shaped fort made of laterite stones having huge walls, tunnels to sea, huge carved doors etc.

Ezhimala Hills

The mountain ranges of Ezhimala are situated in Kannur district. The hillocks have a height of around 286 m. It has some historical significance because this was the headquarters of the Ezhimala Rajya in the Sang period. It was the seat of the Mooshika dynasty. This area was formerly known as Ezhil mala which means ‘high hillocks’. This name later reduced to form Ezhimala.


Paithalmala is a hill station that is situated in Kannur district. It is part of the Western Ghats and has a height of around 1372 m above sea level. These mountain ranges extend to about 500 acres and are fully covered with dense forest. A wide variety of flora and fauna can be found here and the view of the valleys and mountains from here is breathtaking.

Gundert Bungalow

Gundert bungalow is situated in Kannur district. It was here Dr. Herman Gundert who was a German scholar and missionary stayed. He was the one who prepared the first Malayalam dictionary. The first Malayalam newspaper was also developed from here. He lived here for around 2 decades.

Arakkal Kettu

Arakkal Palace is situated in Kannur district. This palace is the Royal residence of the Arakkal family who is the only Royal Muslim dynasty in Kerala to control the coastal areas and Lakshadweep. The palace is around 200 years old and is known as Arakkal kettu. This palace is considered as a protected monument by the Archaeological department. The Arakkal kettu consists of the palace, administrative block, mosques and residential building.

Aralam Wildlife

Aralam wildlife sanctuary is the one which is located in the northernmost part of Kerala in the Kannur district. This is also the smallest sanctuary of our state. It was established in the year 1984 and has its headquarters at Iritty. It is administered by the Wayanad division having its headquarters at Sulthan Bathery. Teak and eucalyptus are the main plantations that are found here and it has a variety of flora and fauna

Pazhassi Dam

Pazhassi dam is constructed across the Valapattanam River in Kannur district. It is named so as it lies near to the birth place of Pazhassi Raja. This dam was inaugurated by the late Prime Minister Morarji Desai. The reservoir is used for irrigation and is capable of satisfying the water needs of the whole of Kannur district.


Madayipara is a green laterite hill that is situated in Pazhayangadi in Kannur district. During monsoon season, the laterite soil is covered with green grass. This place has got significance in history as it was the administrative region of the Ezhimala kings. Remnants of an old fort called as Pazhi fort can be seen here.

Parassinikadavu Snake Park

Parassinikadavu Snake Park is located in Parassinikadavu in Kannur district. The main aim of this park is to conserve and protect the snakes which are about to become extinct. There are more than hundred types of snakes in this park both poisonous and non poisonous. Some of the snakes found here are King Cobra, Viper, Krait, Python etc.

Sadhoo Merry Kingdom

Sadhoo Merry Kingdom is a water theme park located in Chala in Kannur district. It was established in the year 2007 and is a favorite place of many tourists. There are several rides that entertain people of all ages. There are 25 rides in this park which includes both water and dry rides. Some of the facilities provided here are restaurants, shops, video games etc. The filtration technique used here is most modern and ensures purity.

Vismaya Amusement Park

Vismaya Water Theme Park is located in Parassinikadavu in Kannur district. This theme park is established and managed by Malabar Pleasures Pvt. Ltd. The facilities provided here are prayer hall, restaurants, conference hall, shops, dormitory etc. Some of the attractive rides offered here include Virtual waterfall, Laser show, Aqua trail, Wave pool, Electric swing, Sky train, Giant wheel, Tornado, Twister etc.
