Ernakulam has all means of transportation as it is well connected to other places by roadways, railways, airways and waterways. There are 2 railway routes from Ernakulam Junction to Kollam, one is the route through Kottayam and another is through Alappuzha route. There are 17 railways stations in Ernakulam district with Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town as the two major stations. The railways stations in Ernakulam district are Aluva, Angamaly, Thripunithura, Edapally, Mulamthuruthy, Karakutty, Chowara, Kalamassery, Nettor, Kumbalam, Mattanchery H., Chottanikkara road, Piravom road, Kanjiramattom and Kumbalam Railway Stations. Cochin Harbour Terminus is a station in Willingdon Island that provides connectivity to the Kochi Port. It is used mainly for the transportation of goods.
In Ernakulam district there are 9 Regional Transport offices which is the highest number in the state. It is in Ernakulam itself that there is maximum number of vehicles. There are three National Highways through Ernakulam namely NH 17, NH 47 and NH 49. Besides, there are two small national highways for Ernakulam namely NH 47A for Cochin port and NH 47C for the connectivity of International Container Transhipment Terminal. NH 47A is the smallest National Highway in the country. The main State Highways through the district are SH1, SH 8, SH 15, SH 16, SH 41, SH 42, SH 43, SH 63, SH 66 and SH 70.
There are city bus services within the district. KSRTC bus stations provide buses to all major places within the state. The main Bus Stations in Ernakulam district are Aluva, Angamaly, Ernakulam Central, Muvattupuzha, Kothamangalam, Kaloor, High Court Junction, Railway Station Junction and Perumbavoor.
There are 2 Airports in Ernakulam district which include a Naval Airport in Willingdon Island and the Cochin International Airport. Naval Airport is the old Cochin Airport. There are International flights from Kochi to foreign countries including Gulf, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka etc. This Airport is the 4th largest in India.
The rivers and lagoons here have enabled water transportation in this district. The two main boat terminals are Mattancherry and Ernakulam High Court Jetty. There are many other places having small ferry services. Daily Ferry services are available at Vypeen, Fort Kochi, Varapuzha and Willingdon Island. There is a major port here called the Cochin Port which helped in the development of this district. A new International port that has been proposed is the Vallarpadam Port and it is nearing completion.
