Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary

peppara-sanctuaryPeppara wildlife sanctuary is on the Western Ghats in Nedumangad Taluk. This sanctuary includes part of Palode and Kottoor Reserve forests. It was established as a sanctuary in the year 1983 due to its ecological importance. It is at a height of 1,715 m above sea level. Some of the main peaks of this sanctuary include Chemmunjimottai, Athirumalai, Arumukhamkunnu, etc. The forest types in this sanctuary include tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen and moist mixed deciduous forests.  Some other attractions of this sanctuary are dam, eucalyptus plantation, rocky terrain, rich fauna and flora etc. There are about 13 tribes settled in this place.

Peppara is a place where the birdwatchers and nature lovers can enjoy them in a better manner. Here one can find rare species of butterflies and moths. The animals found here include tiger, panthers, Nilgiri langur etc and the birds found here include king fisher, darter etc. A glimpse of these alone can satisfy the tourists. In order to do trekking advance permission is required from the authorities. The suitable months for trekking are March to June. The rivers that flow through this area include Karamana and its tributaries.
