Peechi-Vazhani Sanctuary is located in Thrissur district. It lies in the basin of Peechi – Vazhani dam. The total area of this sanctuary is 125 sq kms and is a portion of the Nelliyampathy forest. It is the second oldest sanctuary in Kerala and was established in the year 1958. The highest peak of this area is Ponmudi peak. This sanctuary has its headquarters at Peechi. The tourists can get any information from the information centre set up here. The Kerala Forest Research Centre is also situated here which gives an added importance to the sanctuary.
The vegetation types found here include dense and moist deciduous and semi-evergreen forests. There are wide varieties of orchids and medicinal plants grown here. As per studies conducted, there are 131 different species of medicinal plants grown here. Some other trees found here are teak, rosewood, shrubs and herbs. One can get a glimpse of Deers, Elephants, Bisons etc. if you go deep into the thick forests. There are also other animals such as tiger, leopard etc and birds of different types.
The place is also ideal for activities such as trekking and boating. Boating can be done in the reservoir.
