Willingdon Island is a manmade island in Ernakulam district. This island is named after the former British Viceroy in India, Lord Willingdon. This island was created with the soil that was removed from the Vembanad lake during the construction of the Kochi port. This island is connected to the mainland through the Venduruthy bridge. At present it is a commercial center in Kochi and there are many hotels, trading centers, headquarters of Southern naval command etc.
The best time to visit this island is during the months between December and May as the weather is pleasant during this time. This old manmade island and the backwater surrounding it is a scenic beauty. There is a children’s park in this island where there are many modern amusement facilities for the children. The other attractions here include the Cochin harbor, St. Francis church, Fort Kochi etc.
