Kallar is a town that is located in Thiruvananthapuram district. The river Kallar flows through this whose water level rises greatly during rainy seasons. The area also got this name due to the river. The word Kallar is derived from two Malayalam words ‘Kallu’ meaning stone and ‘Aaru’means river. The pebbles in this place are attractive and round shaped. The area is filled with wide variety of trees and different types of birds. This is an ideal place for picnicking. Visitors to this place can engage in activities like trekking, bird watching, swimming etc.
This town lies on the way to the Ponmudi hills. Here there are tourist facilities that are provided by the District Tourism Promotion council. Facilities like restaurants, rest rooms, shops selling forest products, telephone booth etc is available here. The nearby attractions to Kallar are the Golden Valley and the Meenmutti waterfalls. Trekking from the right side of the Kallar Bridge takes you to the Golden valley and then to the Meenmutti waterfalls. While trekking one can seek the guidance of the Kallar Vana Samrakshana Samiti and it is possible to get a tour guide also. You have to be careful during the rainy season, as there may be leaches in this area.
