Banasura Sagar dam is located near Padinjarathara in Wayanad district. It is the largest earth dam in India. It is also the second largest dam in Asia and lies on the tributary of the river Kabini. This dam is a part of the Indian Bansurasagar Project that was started in the year 1979 with the aim of supporting the Kakkayam Hydro electric project in order to provide water to those areas where there is scarcity. At present this project is under execution.
There are many small islands that are formed here due to the reservoir. As this dam is situated between the hills, it provides a beautiful picturesque. The dam extends to a very large area and the water here is very clear. This is an important tourist destination. It is an ideal picnic spot which gives a feeling of freshness to the visitors. Several tourist amenities are available here. There is a small park for the kids, a garden and seats for the tourists to relax. Boating facilities are also available here.
