Kovalam beach is situated in Thiruvananthapuram district and is a beach town. Earlier Kovalam was just a fishing village and was later transformed into a major tourist destination from the early seventies onwards. The main land of the beach is covered by numerous palm trees and coconut trees. As there are ilmenite and thorazite present in the sand, it is usually partially black colored.
Kovalam comprises of three beaches that are separated by rocks. The three beaches are namely the Lighthouse beach, Hawah beach and the Samudra beach. The Light house beach is the largest and the most popular of the three and there is also a 35 meter tall light house here. The lighthouse glows in the dark at particular intervals. The tourists can enjoy the sight of the Vizhinjam mosque from this beach. The next largest beach is the Hawah beach or the Eve’s beach which is the first topless beach in India. It is famous for the topless European ladies who enjoy their vacations here. But now topless bathing has been banned here except in resorts. The beach is semi circular in shape and fishing is also carried out from here. The third beach namely the Samudra beach is in the northern part which is best for relaxing and enjoying the calm sea. Fishermen also do fishing trade from this beach.
There are numerous resorts, restaurants, small shops, yoga centers, ayurvedic saloons etc in Kovalam and is famous for the latter. This place is also famous for the Kathakali performance done by the artists in the evening. Various thrilling and adventurous sport activities can be carried out from here. The tourists can enjoy surfing, skiing, swimming etc. There are safe as well as unsafe areas in the sea which are marked specially to indicate the tourists. One can also hire boats from the fishermen and enjoy catching fishes.
