Asianet Communications Private Limited company was incorporated in Delhi on 5th March 1991. Later the office of this company was shifted to Chennai of the 3rd of December 1997. The company then became a Public Limited Company from 15th January 2000. Asianet channel was promoted by Dr.Raji Menon and Mr.Sasikumar in the year 1991 at the time when the Satellite television broadcasting began to emerge in India. The well known television companies like Star TV, ZEE, etc were also giving form at that time. Up-linking from Indian soil was not permitted.
Initially Asianet hired a transponder on Russian satellite named "EKRAN” and the up-linking were from the USSR, after which they began to hire transponder on "RIMSAT" satellite. The up-linking was moved to an island in Philippines named Subic Bay Island and then to Manila. In the beginning, the transmission time was just three hours per day but by the year 1994, it was slowly increased to 12 hours per day. In early 1995, up-linking was moved to Singapore and it gained complete operational status. As there was a change in the policy of the Indian Government, Asianet began up-linking from Chennai through VSNL. And finally from 15th July 2002, the channel started to up-link from Asianet’s own earth station or Teleport that was set up at Asianet Complex in Thiruvananthapuram.
